Seoul, South Korea will now be home to the largest floating island in the world. This remarkable piece of architecture will be one of Seoul’s major landmarks. Set on the River Han the island is built in three parts held together by twenty three weather proof chains secured to a buoy. The island has been designed such that it will stay afloat even in case of a flood.

Of the three, the largest islet is set picturesquely near the base of the waterfall studded Banpo Bridge at the Banpo Hangang Park. The three-storied marvel boasts a 700-seat convention center. This business center is set on the rooftop and has a set of solar panels to generate its own electric power. Spanning 54sqm, these solar panels have the capacity to produce 6 kilowatts per house of power on a daily basis.

The second islet will be a center for arts and cultural events. The third islet is being developed to entertain those with a fetish for adventure aquatic sport activities. The center will put special emphasis on yachting apart from promoting other water sports. The floating island will probably be ready soon. The 96.4 billion KRW floating island, which is expected to be completed by September 2011, will be built completely with private funds and will probably be a sparkling jewel in the crown of the 600-year old Seoul.
