- Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony to be held at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 17 May
- Olympic Flame arrives into Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall on 18 May
- The Olympic Flame will travel 8,000 miles across the UK to within 10 miles of 95% of the population. 8,000 Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame for approximately 300 metres each, passing the Olympic Flame from torch to torch until it reaches the Olympic Stadium on the eve of 27 July.
Back in the times of the Ancient Greeks, the Olympic Flame was widely believed to have divine origins, as the Olympic flame was stolen from the Gods on Mount Olympus. Prometheus, an Olympian himself, took pity on Man as Man was plunged into the dark and harsh times. In an act of kindness and bravado, Prometheus stole the flame of Olympus to give Man their greatest gift, fire. Zeus, King of the Gods, took this as act of kindness as an act of treachery. At the end of the day, Prometheus' s liver would regenerate itself, and therefore repeating the vicious cycle every day. Today, the Olympic flame represents the positive values of fire: ritual, light, warmth, cooking, protection and creation. The flame is to honour their greatest gift from the divine ones.
