Antonio Lopez was a true original who reimagined the face and image of fashion through his inimitable illustrations, glam photos, and larger-than-life personality. His sketches filled the pages of WWD, Vogue, and the New York Times in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, chronicling the powerful silhouettes and visages of that era’s youth. In their forthcoming book from Rizzoli, Antonio Lopez: Fashion, Art, Sex & Disco, authors and brothers Roger and Mauricio Padilha trace Lopez’s creative swath through the swinging sixties, the seventies in Paris, and the decadent New York of the eighties with contributions from friends and intimates like Andre Leon Talley and Anna Sui. It’s an unvarnished view of a restlessly mad and beautiful spirit, one that inspired everyone from the most haute of nouvelle society to the grittiest of club kids.
The authors celebrate the launch of the book tonight with a party and a performance by Joey Arias, one of the first big celebrations of NYFW. To help kick off the festivities, the Padilha brothers share a dozen exclusive images of what they call the Candy Bar girls. For the photos, click below.
