Vivanta by Taj – Whitefield, Bangalore rose above 180 global entries to win ‘Building of the Year’, and ‘Interior Design Award’ and ‘Architecture Award’ in the Hotel and Commercial categories at the 2010 Singapore Institute of Architects Design Awards. Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces commissioned the firm to design the flagship hotel for their new brand, Vivanta, a response to changing customer behaviour patterns, to appeal to the cosmopolitan world-traveller. The outcome broke the mould to establish a new interiors, architecture, landscape and hospitality model in India.
Architecture, interior and landscape are integrated in conceptual clarity and experiential strength. The building is designed as a landscraper, maximising high site coverage and replacing the surface area of the site with a sloping, wrapping and bending landscape plane. Public and private spaces interweave cinematically along the public promenade. The seamlessness encourages social interactions. Adapting to local workmanship abilities and construction management processes, workmanship defects were embraced as part of the aesthetic through finishes intentionally celebrating the raw rusticity.
The hotel is an extension of the surrounding high-tech business park; a vibrant business hub combined with a relaxing abode after work. Architecture and landscape are integrated into the enjoyment of Bangalore’s mild climate. A naturally ventilated rooftop bar opens out onto landscaped gardens that form part of a green roof. Rainwater is harvested for landscape irrigation. Composition of highly reflective dark/light tinted glass alludes to the memory of the original site and achieves OTTV values without compromising room views.
