Paris-based Explorations Architecture, together with engineering firms Flint & Neill and Arup Lighting have won the international competition to design the Negrellisteg crossing, a pedestrian bridge, over the Hauptbahnhof railways in downtown Zurich, Switzerland. The competition was held by the City of Zurich with 12 shortlisted teams.
Competition-winning design for the new Negrellisteg pedestrian bridge in Zurich by Explorations Architecture, Flint & Neill and Arup Lighting
Project Description from the Architects:The Negrellisteg will link the Zollstrasse / Klingenstrasse area to the Europaallee development (approx. 300,000 sm of new buildings).
The winning scheme is a monolithic continuous concrete structure including a pedestrian/cyclist crossing and two commercial buildings serving as access ramps. With its iconic shape and innovative material, the Negrellisteg will be a new gateway for people entering the city by train.
The 150m span will be constructed with ultra high performance concrete ‘voussoirs’. The thin shell ‘voussoirs’ will form a perforated tube which gives a sense of protection over the railway. At night, the tube will be lit from inside using dynamic color LEDs.
